About the Lectin
The most prominent protein of PMA is a mannosebinding
lectin. It is a tetramer of four identical subunits
of 14 kDa. Molecular modelling of the Polygonatum
lectin and lectin-related protein indicated that the threedimensional
structure of both proteins strongly resembles
that of the snowdrop lectin.1
Purified lectins agglutinated rabbit and rat
erythrocytes best of all, they less agglutinated mice and
horse erythrocytes, but did not agglutinate human, cow,
sheep and frog erythrocytes at all.2
